Re: MSD IGNITION
Just a 70bhp wet shot with a 4 degree retard on full throttle. Nothing complicated, but then again, enough run a Sunbeam Lotus to 12.5 seconds at 115mph.

Re: MSD IGNITION
Just fitted the 6AL unit but the rev counter does not work.
Manual says I need the PN8910.
Any thoughts?

Re: MSD IGNITION
That's because the MSD is sucking the life out of the earth on the car. Just shows how bad the wiring on older cars really is.
Yes the RPM counters lose reading. That box will sort it. Think they are about £40.

Re: MSD IGNITION
Ordered the PN8910
First impressions,
A lot fatter spark
Starting is easier with less choke
Cold running is more reliable
Normal running, no noticeable difference although I have not opened the plugs up yet.
Not checked MPG yet
As the ignition was always the weakest link in the 1960's engine chain, so far I'm pleased with the purchase and would recommend it

Re: MSD IGNITION
Hallo Gentlemen,
I have read all 10 pages of this thread. Wow, I love this thread!!
There are plenty of these units available in South Africa at very cheap prices! And that set the lights on!!
There are 6L and 6AL units available. How do I know if its the real thing and not a copy from the East?
I can get a 6AL that is nearly new for R 2 000.00 and 6A for around R 1 200.00.
I attached a photo of a unit that I am looking at. It is limited at 7000Rpm and comes off a Mustang V8.
Can it be changed back for a 4 cylinder engine?
I think most people looking at buying units at good prices are very scared of buying knock offs!!
Thank you ALL for a magic thread!
Kind Regards,
Ernst Conradie

Re: MSD IGNITION
Hi Ernst,
Don't waste your time with a 6L - Stick to the 6AL with the RPM limiter. How do you know it's real ?
Well, not difficult to me, but maybe for you. Smell it, it should smell 'electronic' and no smell of factory oil. Open the back up; inside should be ALL SEALED with epoxy over most of the components.
You can buy the limiter chips for no money, they just pull in and out.
To change to 4 cylinder, you unscrew that little black cap on the side and snip the two wires....easy.

Halo Gentlemen,
Perry, you're a star!!! Thank you very much.
I will contact the seller tomorrow and go with tools included. If I cannot open it, I don't buy it!!!
We came second in class on Saturday with the Alfa GTV 2.0 and now I must get my Fiat finished.
I have 3 weeks, that's all!
Thank you for a magic thread and thanks Guy for this forum!
Regards from Sunny Cape Town.

Re: MSD IGNITION
Update:
80 mile trip to AutoItalia Brooklands, 5 laps of the Mercedes track, 2 hill runs and 80 mile back home.
Never missed a beat and starting hot or cold up to today's car standards
Highly recommended and thank you to this forum for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: MSD IGNITION
Unfortunately mine failed on me last night again (well on my wife with our 3 year old in the car - she wasn't too pleased)
Anyway haven't pin pointed the issue yet. I hopped in a taxi to the rescue. Swapped over the cables to the old stock system and she kicked into action again and I received an applause.
First time it failed was due to the SS Blaster coil burning out. This time it was running on an old bosch stock coil. Not sure if it burnt that out or the msd unit failed.
Will update with details at the weekend.
Thanks (apart from that it ran like a dream while it lasted - maybe my fault for buying a used analogue msd box!).

Re: MSD IGNITION
Sunbeam Lotus owner had same issue last week. Turned out his unit purchased on an internet auction site was a fake......
A lot of 2nd hand ones for sale because the buyers discover they are fake.
Are you sure only the orange and black are to the coil ?

Yes all wired up correctly. What concerned me was that there was no sticker/label on the back of the case but it was an old model with an old original MSD oil filled coil (swapped at MSD for the SS blaster). (came in an authentic vintage box untouched).
I may well end up opening the unit up to check her out (shame they are riveted). No smell of oil.
Thanks
