Zagato 2L Engine Break-in

Post by pv269 »

HI Everyone:

very nice news.
I took the Zagato out last night for about 180 miles of the 500 I plan to drive for breakin Phase 1.
Looped the city a couple of times.
Basically did from 3000 to 4000 RPM and not much more.
I varied the speeds and rpms

The timing is advanced as I could hear it pinging, however, it may be the compression ratio due to the pistons and/or the centrifugal advance springs on the distributor are not set well.

Cams are stock.
I put premium in as I normally do and further added some octane booster.
The Booster seemed to help squelch pinging.

I will ascertain the adavance settings in the morning with timing light.
Certainly it should not exceed 10deg BTDC.
The higher compression pistons may cause it to be rolled back on timing unless I can get some better fuel and keep Octane boost additive with me during fillups.

ENgine develops plenty of power for the amount of throttle I was giving.
Much quieter at idle and under load.
Very little engine vibration esp coming in to my clutch pedel, before was bad.
Shifting markedly improved, hardly any notch/ synchro hesitation, clutch actuates very nicely

I put paper under the engine to see if any leaks exist.

Will check engine oil, coolant level, smell the fluids, and inspect spark plugs in the morning, also will hose off the engine to remove any oils / greases from assembly.

Planning breakin period 2 which will be: Oil Change 20-50 Oil and filter; valve adjust; general inspection and rev under 5K till 1500 mi checkUp.

Breakin period 3: will run 20-50 synth on next oil change along with general engine check.

Happy Motoring to all!
