Air Filter Queries

Hi all,

I've been speaking to Phill Lanes today who is working on my car and we've come across an issue around the Air Filter, and a limitaion on space.

As I've been looking around to find some alternatives to the BIG K&N Filter that I supplied, its got me wondering as to what problems would be encountered if a quoted "capacity of BHP" of the filter was below the target BHP that the car should produce. For instance, a Filter rated for 400bhp, when we want 500+ from the engine. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Also, Phill has given me the dimensions of 150mm Diameter and 125mm Length as being all there is to squeeze a Filter in. Does anyone know of a Filter available "off the shelf" that would fit in there, and be suitable for the power we're aiming for? Or of somewhere to make a custom filter perhaps?

Any advice is appreciated as always.

Thanks,
Ant

Ant maybe not direct help but sometimes you won't find the answer in catalogues and I would suggest speaking to KandN or get someone at Demon Tweeks or GPR to do the leg work. I would avoid going a non K and N route, as the filtration of a foam filter namely by Piper cross was inferior (notes by the residue of dirt inside of the piper airbox).

More power means higher massflow. If the filter is too small you'll get a pressure drop across the filter medium = power loss.

This is why blocked filters (and K&N perform better than most - maybe any - in the 'laden' condition) sap power.

It might be worth talking to ITG filters, a filter name I trust, you will certainly get good technical advice from them. I don't know how good K&N are in that regard.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I know K&N do thousands of different filters so will be sending them an enquiry, along with the one I've just sent to ITG.

Thanks again,
Ant

K&N allow you to find a filter based on shape, then size. I've used this to find one to fit my application before.

Here's the URL:

Yup, Sean - shame it doesn't have a box for

1. What's your bhp
2. How much room have you got.

Fun and games with air filters - as ever..

GC

BTW - Sean - did that sandwich plate thread match OK? I asked you to let me know.

My thoughts exactely. I've found some on the K&N site, but have yet to contact them for a BHP capacity.

ITG did look hopeful though, some nice compact units with high HP capacity. I'm going to have a word with Phill and see if the dimension he's given me above are absolute or if we can squeeze another inch here and there. Failing that, I have sent ITG an email to see what they can do in terms of custom or if they have anything that isn't listed on their site.

Fingers crossed some positive news will come back!
