Ideas about exhausts

Hi all,

I'd like to have a go at making a custom exhaust for the car sometime after I get it back.

I currently run a large twin exhaust on the car which I have been advised (by this forum) to remove. It is very free flowing, but also very heavy and very obstructive of airflow under the car.

Now, my mind immediately jumps to a short side exit number to avoid having to run pipework under the boot floor where the intercooler is housed. Car is a Toyota MR2 by the way.

Are there any design features that should be taken into consideration if I do a side exit? Does the air flow around teh car restrict the exhaust at all if its just popping out the side of say an air vent? Would the car need to be remapped after having the new exhaust fitted?

Thanks for any advice.
Ant

I am not sure about side exhaust design but you will for sure need to tune the fuelling and probably ignition as this is what I had to do in my car after fitting new exhaust manifold with the rest of the pipes. I have gained only by this 18HP in 2.0L 16v Fiat engine.

Thanks very much. Will have to be another visit to the tuner then me thinks once this is done.

Hopefully be able to have it on a switchable/uploadable map from a laptop so I can chop and change the exhausts as I need to. Will see if its worth while further down the line.

Check the legality of side exit, Ant, an MOT inspector might know.

Will do Guy. I'm on an MOT tester forum too so will have an answer later on for that.

Ok, I checked the MOT forum and there is no issue about where the exhaust exits the car. So side exit is legal.

The only possible issues are blows in the exhaust (wont be a problem), and noise levels. This is tester dependant though. There is no officially required, or tested noise level.
