I feel that the use of the proper symbols not only looks good but also help the legibility of a post just a bit

If you need a degree symbol As in 45‚° for seats and such, you can get the ‚° by typing in ALT 0176 on the numpad.

likewise

Just a small word of warning. This doesn't work *everywhere* - the symbols that appear are fairly standard but some fonts/typefaces have them missing. You should also be wary of any symbol that only requires two digits to create as you could be referencing an older standard that is also language dependent (which can obviously lead to all sorts of confusion).

If you are using windows you should have a little utility called "character map" (start menu->programs->accessories->system tools->character map) that allows you to look these codes up and it also conveniently tells you what key combination you can use to create them. It even allows you to create a string of symbols that you can then copy and paste into your document.
