Volumex Set Up Question
Has anyone fitted the Weber DCOE carb on the compressor in a Fiat 124 Volumex ?
Chuck and me have some thoughts about this, because the distance between the compressor and the fender on a Fiat 124 Spider is very small..cutting the fender is impossible for me...
Some photos about the conversion were very helpfull..
regards Andy007

Re: Volumex Set Up Question
After some years now it goes away with VX project. The blower ratio is 32/22 = 1.45, moderately increased, Head is ported with new valve guides, Lancia Integrale Headgasket ( Elring = german manufactured ) , adjustable cam wheels, 4-1 header with 50,8mm straight thru silencer ( only one ) .
The plan is building a fast road race car , performance about 160-170 hp.
This is a Lancia Beta VX conversion, so i have to go to upper mounted distributor on ex-cam housing. Now i need advise for cam choosing : on the ex side is the 124 Spider exhaust cam with 9,564mm ( the only cam i have with distributor drive ) , on inlet i can chosse between 124 Spider with 9,564mm, 131 racing with 9,9mm or 130TC cam with 10,033mm.
So what do you think about Duration, LATDC ? What is the best lift at TDC ?
Carb planning is not finished, when there is place for a Weber 45DCOE , i will install. If there is not enough place, i will go to Weber 40DCNF.
Has anyone a Fiat 124 Volumex inlet manifold ( carb to blower ) ?
Any suggestions ?
kind regards Andy007

Re: Volumex Set Up Question
Go with the 130TC inlet cam in this case and hope that you don't lose all your fuel down the ex port. For your power target (which you will 'fly' past with that beautiful head work & race header) the ex lift is a bit high but I would give it a try.
No idea whatever about durations and LATDC with the OE cams and I wouldn't care anyway just set them up at standard VX FL timing which I am sure you know.
I have this available if it's any use - frankly no idea what it's off.

Re: Volumex Set Up Question
I note incidentally that you have a nice shiny (gold colored) bolt on the aux d/s pulley. Have you had the old 12.9 grade bolts replated and the washers too?
If yes take them off and get some new OE, they are still aval - and I stock them too.
One would typically use bright zinc plate & color passivate. You must not use this on 12.9 grade as you'll weaken the parts (unless the plater went thru the most careful hydrogen de-embrittlement regime - which few know how to do - and it is anyway very 'hit and miss' as to whether it is effective).
(Never, ever, dear reader, use cadmium plating because the steel bolts will be softened. I was once presented with a set of OE head washers that had been subjected to this and the head bolts nearly sheared off as the washers compressed..)
I would never advocate re-plating the critical spring washers (eg: aux d/s and cam) as they will be liable to fracture. Get new OE or wire-brush/beadblast and check for cracks and just spray paint the bolts and washers once fitted.
Just warning you - whether you agree or take my advice is your affair (in the nicest possible way..)

Re: Volumex Set Up Question
Today i meassured some types of cams:
130 TC inlet cam gives 2,85mm LATDC at 103 / Beta VX inlet cam gives 1,65mm LATDC at 103
Exhaust cam 124 Spider with distributor drive gives 2,45mm LATDC at 107
Too much lift ?

Re: Volumex Set Up Question
Please confirm that those figures are measured valve lift at same running clearance measured at the valves fitted in the head.

Re: Volumex Set Up Question
Guy,
Your carb and manifold setup pictures look like they are of a Fiat Argenta Volumex setup.
I am pretty sure as I pulled one off a factory crate Volumex engine.

Re: Volumex Set Up Question
Just noticed on your Feb 25th post that you are using a Lancia Integrale head gasket. It better be for the Delta, with the intake and exhaust on the same sides of the engine as the Fiat engine you are building or your engine will have severe detonation and overheating issues. The Integrale has "reverse port layout" compared with earlier Fiat engines. Because of this, the cooling holes in the head gasket are reversed on the Integrale gasket.
