Camshaft valve clearance

Post by Robhi »

Having taken the head of my 2L TC Montecarlo engine to sort a blown head gasket, I have been idling around and took the opportunity to measure the valve clearances with the cam covers off but I don't have any data to compare these too. Can any one please help?

The Exhaust valve clearances appear reasonably consistent at 0.019/0.020/0.021/0.019"
The inlet valves clearances are less consistent at 0.020/0.014/0.021/0.017"

So I guess there are two questions:
1. what should the target clearances be, and
2. what are the tolerances?

The head is a VX head, originally modified by GC with GC 3D cam set up (other mods include Forged GC HC race 84.4 Bore pistons; inlet/exhaust seats mod to GC Road-Race spec 43.5/38, gas flowed head and GC inlet manfiold (40) ; thank you to GC for digging into his archives (paper work with car was somewhat absent); the car also has webber throttle bodies and a Redline ECU fuel management and full electronic distributorless ignition set-up and a sports exhaust.

if both GC 3D cams;

inlet cold 0.016"
ex cold 0.018"

tol +/- 0.002"

gasket settle - tighten up and leave overnight & next day retighten cambox bolts to 14-16lbf ft before checking final clearances.
