Lancia 16V Turbo - strip down & rebuild

Post by MattD »

Hi All

Intending for this thread to follow the strip & rebuild of my Lancia 16V turbo unit, which was fitted in my SSC Stylus kit car.
I had the misfortune (& stupidity) to damage the engine chasing a Golf R32 en-route to work one recent Friday morning.

So I decided to start the strip down of the engine over the weekend to find out what had happened, and it was just as expected really.
My self diagnosis is a follows,

No 4 has suffered a big-end bearing problem. Double thickness of bearing shell has then forced the piston further up the bore, and valve contact has occurred.
The real question for initial discussion please, is the crank salvageable or scrap ?

Having looked at the rest of the bottom end, it looks like a rebuild was long overdue.

I've been lucky enough to obtain a spare engine from a Fiat Coupe for reasonable outlay (16VTs really do go for high money these days), and that is ready to get fitted for my first sprint of the year.
Unless of course, I need the crankshaft for a GCRE engine rebuild, as I think 2013 will see the long overdue move to a proper race engine.

Look forward to your comments.

Hello Guy

Thanks for confirming what I suspected. I'd better have a proper look at the valve train also, as there has clearly been contact.
Could you advise best time to telephone you to discuss the next step, or alternatively, I am very likely to be passing nearby in the next few weeks.

If anyone has a good spare late type 2 litre crank they are willing to part with, please let me know.
That would allow me to fit the spare Fiat engine into the car & buy me some time.

Regards

Matt
