Peugeot 205 GTi big end bearings replacement

Post by DamirGTI »

Hi Guy !

Please , i need your help with this :

I'm in the process of "freshening up" my engine , up to the point now to replacing big end bearing shells - how to prepare them (clean protective coating) prior to fitting ? and is there any special precautions during the torquing up the conrod bolts (i'm reusing old conrod bolts , but will mix them up a bit from one to another rod and apply Loctite thread sealant .. hope that's fine ..)

As for torque stages for the big end bearing bolts/nuts , the OE spec. goes like this :
1. 40 Nm
2. Slack off
3. 20 Nm + 70 deg.

.. now , the thing that's worries me is - i do not have a degree wheel for the angle torquing , can this " +70 deg. " be re-calculated in Nm-s instead of degrees ?

Something else i need to watch out during this procedure of bearing shells replacement ?

Thanks !!

Kind regards
Damir

NO LOCTITE.

use engine oil as the lubricant on threads and bolt or nut underhead.

If you tell me the exact bolt thread diameter I will give a torque setting tomorrow.

Ok. Guy , it's not urgent , will measure bolt thread diameter tomorrow and post the measurements .. as well as a few pictures of the piston/conrod/bolt+nut assembly . (just got back from the garage , and off to sleep - exhausted !!)

Thanks !

Hi !

As requested , heres the conrod bolt thread dia. :

Conrod bolt thread : 9.00mm

Some pics :

Conrod nut (with some slotted markings -> I and II .. dunno what they represent ?!)

.......

Now , the bearing shells ... they've done about 60.000km's now :

Piston No.1

Piston No.2

Piston No.3

Piston No.4

... one shot of the main bearing shell (flywheel end of the crankshaft) :

.....

And some crankshaft seal dilemma , the OE seal has some sort of ribs and arrow on it , while aftermarket one doesent have a ribs nor the arrow ... so , dunno if it's wise to fit this aftermarket one or refit back the OE seal ? they're same dimension - 90x110-7 .

OE seal (the black/brown on the top is an OE item , the bottom blue seal is aftermarket ..)

Thanks !!

Tighten the nuts to 51Nm (38lbf ft). If they torque OK they should be alright although ordinarily I would use new. Be sure to use a highly accurate torque wrench like Facom or Snap-On, not soem cheap thing that will overtighten them.

The markings on the nuts are to indicate the grade of material.

As for the seal - if it's the right diameter and same type material (nitrile polymer), design - with sealing edge, spring and dust lip on the outside it is probably OK. I always use only OE seals - the consequences of a leak there are pretty dreadful!

Understood , thanks for info Guy !

Just one more thing : which type of solvent do you normally use for cleaning up protective coating on the bearing shells ? ... is brake cleaner or cellulose thinner good for this ?!

Kind regards

I would just use brake cleaner - presumably you can get hold of this? I use G Force/Wynns/Wurth..

Greetings Guy !

A quick one please , dunno if i'm doing something wrong here .

Big end bearing shell protective coat cleaning - they have some kind of white , not oily but more kinda "powdery" coating , tried to clean them with Wurth brake cleaner but seems like nothing happens ?! (no coating dissolving ...) , tried with cellulose thinner on a two shells for a test -> something started to happened , white appearance clears but again not completely ...

So , do they have to be bright shiny cleaned or not ?!?

The two ones on the left are cleaned first with brake cleaner , then with cellulose thinner , the rest of the shells on the right are just washed/sprayed with brake cleaner :

"The cleaned ones" - is this enough ?

Thanks !

Kind regards
Damir

(they're the Glyco bearing shells ...)

sorry to say but it sounds like oxidation to me...

I see it sometimes on the new generation Fiat bearings if moisture has got into the packet.

... so , what should i do now ?! i can't take them back for money refund .

The packet was vacuum sealed up all around (though there might been some pin hole on the PVC bag ...) , the ones which i've been using before where "AE" bearings (in the blue package .. this ones are Glyco , in the red package .. ) and they've had white/milky oily coating which was easy to remove ...
