introduce my self.

Post by hgk »

Hi.
I am new to this forum, as a matter of fact this is my first forum ever.
My name is Hans and I am from Sweden.

I've just started to build a 131 Abarth replica as a Gp2 track historic race car. It is 25 years ago since a build my Escort MkII Rally car. I raced with it for a few years. So I'd like a little help from you experienced people out there please!

My donor car is a 131 Mirafiori 1600, nice orange with very nice body, I am shocked ...no rust! I allso purchased a 2l TC motor that came out of a rally car that just needs some bits and pieces.

The big issue is gearbox, diff, rear axle, shocks and springs, so if any one has a idea what to use, please help.

All the best!

Hi Hans

that sounds like a nice project indeed.
The question is how far you want to go with the replica, manufacture a independent rear suspension (IRS) or stick with the "life"axle?

I don't encourage links unless unavoidable or very beneficial, and in this case I'm going to suggest from the outset that you study this:

http://www.sfconline.org.uk/models/131/131abarth.asp

SFC is the 'Sporting Fiats Club', formerly the Fiat Twin-Cam Register, a club with which I have had close links over the years. I am a member of that site. Their 'models archive' is one of the very best around and a great credit to the author.

Have a good read. I can tell you straightaway that if you try to recreate one of those vehicles as-is it will cost more than actually buying one, and to be honest if I was doing it I would change a lot of things for the sake of simplicity, availabilty and cost. For most people, what it looks (and goes) like matters more than what is underneath. And I speak as one who would very much like a 131 Abarth for Xmas...

yes, digressing briefly Andy, I have never even sat in one, but I did have a lovely red GC engined Hawkridge Stratos replica in my custody a couple of years ago (Sue Holloway's) and that was the only time I ever drove a car more than 10 miles and NO_ONE tried overtaking. Even a Porsche 911 slowed down and pulled in behind me, & I never went over 50mph!

I dont know how far I will take it, Im not after an exact 131 abarth replica , it depence how hard FIA is on the homologations for the car.
I just want a good 131 race car, but I have to follow the regulation and that is a little more difficult.

I love to have the independent rear suspension, but I guess that it is very difficult to get an abarth axel.

have any one use a BMW rear axel on a race Fiat?

I can allso go for a 2000 sport spec with a wide tarmac body. regarding the homologation paper for group2 they have similar parts but the 2000 sport only have 8 valv 2l tc engine.

I just get the complete spec for my engine if some one is intrested. here it is.

2l Fiat tc the block came out from a Fiat 132

Modified cylinder head
weber 45dcoe with spec. manifold, latest Fiat 131 2,0 tc ignition.
smaller crankshaft pulley , cams by Colombo/bariani.
original 1600 tc pistons so it have 11-1 in compression, weight and balanced pistons, rods and crankshaft
4 …œpuck‚ clutch, modified oil pump and sump .

I confess, I also fell in love with the Stratos...I was 14 or so, visiting the International Auto Exibition in Frankfurt, watching a video of Munari flying the Stratos through the snow at the Monte Carlo Rally...someday maybe...dreaming...

Hans,

if you want to build the 131 along the FIA regulation, than maybe you are quite limited. I dont know if a 131 Rally recreation (rear suspension etc) is according to the homologation.
If not, you maybe have to stick with most of the original parts, like the steel bonnet and maybe even with drumbrakes at the rear axle.
I do drive long distance races with a 1965 Volvo Amazon, which is build according to the FIA annexe K, there is not really much room for modifications.
Maybe it is less strict on "younger" cars, please check and report back.

There is some info on the Fiat 124/131 rear suspension here viewtopic.php?t=524

Thomas.
Thanks for the tips.
It would be much easyer to build a Volvo Amazon here instead of the 131. In sweden there is Amazon parts everywere.

But the reason I pick a Fiat 131 is just for the reason that it have all homologation paper to be a real racer , that including the Rally car. So I can use bigger braks and so on. But it is so hard to get the real parts.

Allso Walter Rohrl was my first sport hero when I was a kid. cannot beat that coment when he said..
"even a trained monkey can drive the audio quattro"
Regarding to the question " how does it feel to be beat'n by a woman (Mich’‚¨le Mouton)"

I am grateful for all tips and hints.

Hi Hans,
i'm new too , i got a Fiat 131 g4 replica that i made my self from a Fiat 131 sport with full finders from marko in finland.

as for the rear susp. i have fitted a BMW 520 model 1986 with some modifications , and have a LS 4.1 ratio .
it runs pretty well but believe me it is very heavy for the car and i only use it for street race.

i will build an independant suspension from Lancia delta HF this summer , i will post pictures for the proses , and i think it is easy too.

iw ill send a picture of my car if you like.

good luck to you .
