Lancia Delta Integrale 8v

Post by Gealing »

Hello All, this is my first post to say hello and introduce you to my Lancia Delta Integrale 8v.

I bought what I thought was a non-modified 8v turbo however I have since replace some of the worn/degraded hoses of the turbo, intercooler and inlet and the performance is now quite astonishing. The turbo boost pressure was, pre hose replacement, 0.6 bar and overbost to 0.9 bar, as expected, however since my samco hose replacement it appears that the boost pressure is achieving 1.5 bar (i didn't think this was possible? with an 8v) and with it a sharp increase in performance. I was planning on going through a path of modifications and upgrades but I'm not 100% sure what I currently have and the performance meets my expectations so I may change my aspirations to this regard.

A few problems I am having with the car.
1. Failed Radiator Fan - ceased to work recently, it appears that no power is going to the fan, temp sensor area at all (using a volt meter to detect) and am attempting to trace the culprit back to a fuse or relay but so far to no avail, have spend 3 hours on this to date - Any ideas would be welcome.

2. At around 3k rpm there is an engine tapping noise, no obvious vibrations, hoping this isn't something terminal (baring etc).

3. The car does not like re-starting after a drive, which makes getting petrol problematic. This may be due to the heat in the engine due to the fan malfunction? Any other ideas welcome.

Other than that the car has been great fun and exceeds my expectations.

To Do
1. Add in front bilstein suspension, I inherited these with the car. It has had the rear suspension put in already.
2. Replace more ducting, ignition leads, spark plus I cannot find the recommend ones B9EGV anywhere for sale (it's using the originals) hoping this may resolve the restart issue.
3. Fit under body brace to prevent shell cracking so I can load up harder in the corners and use the bilstein to full affect.

Thank you for taking a look here.

Gealing.

hi Lawrence, welcome!

Regret to say two things:

1. Car's been 'chipped'. Hence very high boost. Standard over-boost setting is 1 bar not 1.5....
2. Tapping is most likely rod bearings.. At 3000 the load is really coming on the bearings...

I'm working on an 8v Int at the moment. ECU technology is from the elegant and expert Nikola Radenkovic (founder of RP labs). The one I'm doing is fully loaded, no stone unturned. I have posted quite a lot about it on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/GuyCroftRacing).

Yes I post here but currently due to pressure of work not as much as I'd like. Plus the uptake on membership has been er, disappointing.

I'd advise you pull the motor and start from scratch. There was a time the 8v stood unfairly in the shadow of the 16v units. Not so now, the 8v is incredibly rare and you must protect it. Consider that it won the WRC 3/4 times as often as the 16v...

Catch it in time will save the whole unit. Ignore me (I might be wrong) and you risk losing the whole engine.

Thanks for the pictures Guy, I need this in my life / Integrale.

Regarding the rod bearing, is this a "simple" rod bearing replacement or a significant overhaul?

I'm happy to invest in the car over time but first want to stop it self combusting and second slowly replace parts with race spec upgrades overtime.

G,

I can make some photos of my OE pistons mods, OE rod mods etc. but this is not what you want to talk about. I am not a professional so I am not disapointed that my threads are boring for you (so members has another point of view about my threads).

I wanted to do a new thread about making a intake manifold for my engine but I am affraid that you don't want to talk about making, porting etc. of non GC parts, the same way as threads about OE stuff that I told before.

You done a lot of amazing job (it is worthwile to say that most of them was a free knowledge for us-members) and you are on the first place of race engine builders who give me a most important tips for all this stuff. I am sure that if you do not this I would not know about F/L engines even 1/4 that I know now.

Very sincerely.

Don't just post questions to me! Post for all readers, please. With pictures. Just do your best to add interest as well as asking questions. When I have time I will reply, look at the number of posts I have made here - and you will see I take that quite seriously. This a forum. It is not a one-man show to advertise GC.

I do my best to help folk, you included. I am sure you understand.

Please remember the terms under which membership was given to you, by me.

Hello All,

Just a quick follow up on the "chipped" boost. The boost picks up well at >2.5k rpm and peaks at an estimated 1.5 bar. The over boost light comes on when it meets the Integrale's criteria i.e in 2,3,4,5 gear and full acceleration above 2.25k.

Video here for those interested - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M7V9fTXrtE

Now looking to fix that engine rattle (down the rabbit hole).

All the best, Lawrence

Lawrence, if you don't have garage facilities take the car to approved installer Mario Grech-Xerri in Kingston, a long-time friend and a very expert motor vehicle engineer of the 'old school'.

I know why engines rattle and I do not like the sound of this.

Stop driving and hoping and ring GoPerformance cars.

MGX has a website.

Guy, thanks for the note regarding GoPerformance I was looking for a motor engineer I can trust, haven't had much luck to date so I'll reach out to Mario.

I would very much like to do the work myself but probs best to leave it in the hands of the specialists while
I skill up.

Good luck with the assembly of the Integale 8v you are working on.

Out of interest does your acclaimed workshop manual "modifying and tuning Fiat-Lancia engine" cover the Integale 8v ? Are there any left available?

Hi Gealing.
I enjoyed reading your post your car looks to be in excellent condition and they are brilliant little cars I have one myself.
I am very lucky as the engine being built in Guy's photos will soon be in my car. I will be updating my post very soon with lots of information that, reading about your engine problems, I am certain will be of use to you.
Im looking forward to seeing how you get on.

Hi Tom.

Thank you for the note, yes the car has been lots of fun... still a few things to do to get her into shape.

Looking to get the front Bilstein suspension put in over the next few weeks, plus I am going to take it the car to an engine specialist to get it checked over to make sure the small rattling noise is nothing sinister....if it is I may be going for an upgrade of the internals.

What specification are you going for? any photos? Recommendations?

Thanks Larry.
