That's interesting to know. Never heard of that before.
And they always say the colder the air the more power you'll get.
Not in those cases where they just freeze up.

Alfa Romeo designed a valve for the cold air intake to the carbs that operated on a thermostat, when the air coming in got too cold it slowly opened up a second air inlet that was wrapped around the exhaust pipe.
This helped in maintaining an appropriate temperature for the carb intakes.

Vaporizing gasoline takes heat out of the air. Just like boiling water requires energy to transform the water into steam. The boiling water doesn't change temperature, but the harder you heat it, the harder it boils. All energy is used to transform the liquid into a gas. The energy you need to transform the liquid fuel into a gas is taken from the air and the carburetor body, since there is no other heat source. If you have a lot of humidity and the air and carburetor get cooled to below 0 deg. C, the condense from the water that's in the air forms ice particles. Those particles will stick to the inside of your inlet manifold and carburetor, especially if that piece of metal is cold enough to form condensation droplets on it's surface.

Apart from that, dropping pressure will cool down a gas as well. Remember what happens if you compress air? It heats up, so you need an intercooler to keep your intake air cold on a turbo car. The reverse applies as well. Even modern road cars have coolant flowing through the throttle body to avoid freezing up the throttle butterfly and that doesn't even have fuel injected at that spot. It's usually the most narrow spot in your inlet, so directly after that, you will get expansion and thus temperature drop. Ice forms and will prevent your butterfly to shut properly, if you don't heat it sufficiently.

Did you ever fit an airbox in their over the socks or leave them as shown in the photo above?

Any ill effects when stuck in traffic or hot days?

This carb icing thing is incredibly important and yes of course I know about it, major problem on modified VX units, deserves a separate thread, any volunteers?

Be careful with those magnesium wheels. They look corroded and usually, they are just as corroded and thus brittle on the inside. Cast magnesium is often very porous, compared to aluminum. Older magnesium wheels tend to break due to internal corrosion, if they haven't been stored dry and sealed off from air completely.

Sounds like you are about to have a lot of fun with the ice track driving, please show some pictures of the event after you've been there.

Thats cool - a kind of Scandinavian phenomenom to drive on lakes - love it. I did it many years ago with my abarth 130 with spikes.

in my country (especialy in Giant mountains -"Krkonoše") there is a serial of 5-6 races in Autoskijöring.

I think that this is quite uniqe kind of motorsport - We did some research and didn´t found any information about it in foreing countries like Norway, Sweden or Austria...)

- 2 cars with skiers in one ride... 2/3 laps 2-3km long, 3 rides per race... tyres with studs are forbiden, howewer there is excelent substitude Matador SM7 made from compound Z1, Barum YT or some cheaper warinats of Nokians like 4 (without studs), Q, RSI, R....

For example, average speed is about 70kmph (depends on the track) and the top speed on the fastest track was measured with police radar - 158kmph to Audi S1....ordinary FWD car(renault clio sport) reached 145km/h... so interesting speed for skier..

If someone will be interested in this kind of spor, I could PM links to some photogaleries and videos made by my friends...
