After following a recent rather heated discussion in another forum I have a question;
Do Fiat camshafts have a hardened layer or some kind of treatment that prevent wear, or are the cams just equal quality iron straight through?

Frankly they are so durable I've never had metallurgical or hardness analysis done on them sorry, no idea. At a guess I would say the lobes are hardened by chill-casting, see:

The shaft sections appear to be plain SG iron, which certainly means they have not been subjected to any form of nitrocarburising.
