131 ABARTH corsa brakes and suspension setting (corected)

Post by miro-1980 »

Searching the web I have come across some very interesting data shared years ago by Sandro Munari with John Lahm of Road and Track magazine (US)

Munari said he prefers the following setting:

(rear to front brake force). ( As corrected by TR-Spider it obviously is the reverse front-to-rear !!!!)

tarmac :60/40
gravel : 50/50
mud : 40/60
snow : 30/70

shock (spring?) setting :

Tarmac: 80 lb/in compression and 240 lb/in rebound
Gravel : 100 lb/in compression and 150-180 lb/in rebound

if my calculation is correct this translates into
tarmac : 5,6 KG/cm sq. on compression 16,9 kG/cm sq. on rebound
gravel : 7,0 KG/cm sq. on compression and from 10,5 KG/cm sq. to 12,6 KG/cm sq. on rebound

Very interesting and rare data indeed.

Hi Miro

are you sure this is rear-to-front ratio and not vice versa?

Just from thinking about it:
the more slippery the surface gets, the less braking power you can apply and the more you want the car to get loose in the rear.
With a loose rear you can slow the car and negotiate a bend sideways, with locking fronts you just understeer straight on.

So instead of using the handbrake to unsettle the rear, you just dial it in from the beginning?

I have however no experience with a adjustable brake setup in varying conditions.

TR-Spider ,

You are absolutely correct these are front-to-rear, obviously !

My mistake ( I wrote something different than I thought )!
