Crush washers? in a Fiat 131 differential .

Post by RedLexus »

I'm in the process of installing an LSD into a friends 131 rallycar , first time to do one of them . Apparently there's "Crush Washers" ? I did get 2 sleeve type things , with a swollen centre section , but I've no idea where they go? I have 2 differentials here , and neither of them are shimmed on the pinion? is that normal?

The crush sleeve is used to set the correct amount of bearing preload on the pinion shaft bearings. A Haynes 131 or 124 shop manual or a factory manual has detailed instructions on how to set it correctly. Do not attempt to set the bering preload without using a new crush sleeve, you will be replacing the pinion bearings soon if you do.

Many thanks , I since found out that the ones supplied are wrong , they're more like a big plumbers "olive" than the correct one . And sadly the LSD is scrap , it was machined one side after running a bearing , and is now very slightly off centre one side... Shame.

Digging up an old post here but I feel the forum might benefit from this.

Why do you consider the LSD scrap? Shim it to the correct backlash!
Get som engineers blue and get to work. :)

There is nothing wrong with putting shims behind the bearings as long as the structural integrity of the diff housing is good.

Mats

as I understood
and is now very slightly off centre one side

is that the seat of the bearing was machined EXCENTRIC by fault.
That would mean the whole diff body would wobble around and destroy the other bearing and the gears in no time.
You can not solve that with (axial) shimming.

However, you could maybe rescue such a valuable part professionally welding up the now excentric part and re-grinding it centric, of course only if the diff body material allows. If not, the other possibility could be to reduce the diameter further and use the next smaller bearing (if available), but then the strength of the diff body is reduced.

Right you are, I was locked into "centered" as being the right position transverse.
