Making a jig for 2L TC flywheel doweling.

Post by Piotrek125p »

Hi.

I want to make a special jig for 2L TC flywheel doweling op, something like this

Therefore, I have some questions.

-could I use a scrap 1756 crank to make a jig for 2L ? I have a crank with M12 threads in flywheel flange

-I want to make my own flywheel dowels from stainless steel, Φ12,00mm (tolerance -0,005/+0,005mm). You suggest in Your first book that dowells for 2L TC should has 20mm lenght. It will be not too short for 2L ? I measured a thickness of my NOS 2L flywheel flange and it has about 8mm, a hole in crank has about 19.40-20mm depht, so in my opinion it should has about 23-24mm lenght, but I based only for my measurements, I never had before fit a dowell in crank.

When I will make a jig I want to do it in this way:
-remove an old bearing
-checking a crank flange for flatness and ground it with fine stone if neccesary
-cut of a flange
-grinding a cutted place
-clean holes in jig with split fork deburrer
-check for flatness a machined place
-use it for doweling op

GC, do You have some comments for my way of making dowel jig ? I didn't make it before, so any comments based on Your experience will be very important for me. I will use a NOS OE cast iron flywheel with ARP bolts from Nissan KA24 engine, I want to make it a most safety as I can.

Sincerely Piotrek.

Sorry but you'll have to figure this one yourself!

I just cut off an old crank and ground it flat, no use on the 1800 and 1600 units though, the dowel holes on the crank aren't placed accurately (as I soon discovered years ao..) - only the 2 liter ones are..

Do it for fun if you want, but no way do you need to dowel the FW on your unit. I would only dowel on a 9500rpm + full-race unit.

I read before that You suggest to dowel a cast flywheel when it will be work in 7200 RPM plus engine, but if it is not necessary in my engine I will not do it.

GC, do You fit an ARP flywheel bolts with UHL less or more (1.000) that OE bolts ? I didn't measure yet a depht of M12 thread in 2L crank, but I think that slighlty longer bolts with 1.000' UHL will be fit.

Do You always use a new OE flywheel bolts washer ? Is this washer the same in old 131/132 engine and in new eg. Dedra, Delta, Tipo engine ?
