Engine bearing clearance

Post by pete_rallye »

Hi, I am just choosing some engine bearings for a Peugeot XU race engine that I am building and have a question! The bearings are available in the usual standard and associated oversize, but also in an additional size of an extra thou vertical oil clearance. I was just wondering under what circumstances you would use such bearings? Thanks.

You should use the bearing that gives minimum clearance but yet still allows the crank assy to turn freely. There is no virtue at all to running wide clearances - it just increases the oil bleed-down.

Thanks Guy, I couldn't work out why you would want more clearance!
