main bearing caps replace

Post by petter »

Hello,

I got a reserve block for my engine Fiat SOHC 1.3, but without main bearing caps. Can I install caps from another SOHC 1.3 block?

Thanks!

Absolutely not!

Sorry but they are matching sets by engine.

That block is scrap.

Guy, thank you for fast answer! Maybe is solution in new matching (with other caps). But then will be problem with a bearing - larger hole for bearing.

Yes, some might suggest that and then line boring but I would NEVER get involved with that.

You would have to find the best firm in the world to do it because it's an extremely sophisticated op and it would (and should) cost more than finding another block.

There are several firms in the Netherlands (where I live) that do line boring and are reputable and all. There is a cost involved, so that could be a reason not to go ahead. For "expensive" blocks, I wouldn't hesitate to bring it to at least two of them. Over here you will pay somewhere in the 100 euro range for line boring a typical 4 cylinder engine. The engine will have to be clean before you bring it in to them, or expect to pay extra for cleaning.

Thanks but I would caution against this in this case.

It is one thing to line bore an engine with its own caps to bring it back into tolerance, it is quite another to take caps from another motor and try to do that op.

I'm not going into this in any detail.
