Replacing upper and lower sump gaskets with sealant

Post by bigdry »

Hello all, I currently have an 8v integrale engine on the engine stand. The engine had lots of oil leaks due to very old swollen gaskets, loose bolts etc. I have got replacement gaskets but am thinking maybe a more modern solution would be better in the long run, as I have done this job before on other integrales and eventually they start weeping... I'm thinking some Loctite flange sealant such as 5900 or maybe 510 would be suitable for replacing the gasket on the upper sump in conjuction with some Loctite 222 thread lock for the bolts? What do you think? The upper sump gasket is very difficult to reach (basically engine and gearbox have to come out) in the integrale due to 4wd gearbox so its important to get it right! thanks

Really? I thought the upper sump would have been a good place to use sealant.
I'll go with your advice.
Any tips to try and get a good seal permanently?
thanks again.

1. use M6 studs loctited into the block with nyloc nuts, see below.

2. drill the bolts and lockwire them in pairs *

* this is highly effective but a real pain, anyone with the brains to do this would only do it once, hence no photo. Did it on the NHRA unit and never again. Fitting was bad enough. As for periodic strip, well, you figure it out!

I sometimes use blue silicone on both sides of the gasket. This will help keep the seal after the gasket has hardened. Do not apply more than needed, you don't want the silicone ending up somewhere in your engine.
